The World Golf Hall of Fame announced on November 10 that Phil Mickelson was elected to the Hall of Fame's class of 2012. Mickelson received 72 percent of votes in the PGA Tour ballot.
The 40-year-old golfer has 39 tournament victories under his belt, including 3 Masters titles and a PGA Championship. Mickelson joined the PGA Tour in 1992 and met the first requirement for membership in the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2003 after ten years on the tour. He became full eligible for election to the World Golf Hall of Fame last year when he turned 40-years-old. Mickelson was voted into the hall of fame with 72 percent of votes cast by golf journalists, historians, and dignitaries of the game, the highest percentage since 2001 when Greg Norman received 80 percent of votes. The vote easily surpassed the 65 percent of votes required for election.
The hall of fame's selecetion of Mickelson was announced by PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem, "On behalf of the PGA TOUR, I congratulate Phil Mickelson on being bestowed with one of the highest honors in our sport - induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame," Finchem said. "It seems Phil has been destined for this honor for some time. From his days as one of world's premier amateur players to his seamless transition to professional star, Phil has always performed at the highest levels of the sport and this recognition is well deserved."
Mickelson's induction ceremony will take place at the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum in St. Augustine, Florida on May 7, 2012.
"Being called a hall of fame golfer, it does make me sound a little bit old," said Mickelson, "But I don't feel old. I feel like I've got a lot of great golf ahead of me."
