Top amateur golfers from around the world will their pilgrimage to play at this week's U.S. Amateur at the remarkable Erin Hills Golf Course in Holy Hill, Wisconsin.
Opened in 2006, Erin Hills rests on 652 acres of pristine beauty in the Kettle Moraine area, some 35 miles northwest of downtown Milwaukee. Its exquisite layout is highlighted by its natural terrain, glacial dunes, fairways and green styles, which are beautifully accented by their signature oaks and maples.
The Amateur, now its 111th year has been won by some of the world's best professional golfers, including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Mark O'Meara, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.
But for any of 300 plus golfers who are competively vying to be among those greats, they'll first have to deal with Erin Hills. At over 7,760 yards, The Erin Hills layout is the longest in U.S. Amateur history and quite possibly, the most challenging.
"This golf course is one of those places where you can't constantly attack," said course designer Michael Hurzdan. "There are times when you can attack it and there are times when you have to back off and find a smart way to play it. And every single day, that will change."
"Erin Hills boasts one of the greatest natural inland sites for a golf course that I have ever seen," said Mike Davis, United Stages Golf Association senior director of Rules and Competitions. "It was designed and is managed in ways that are respectful of the environment - and it also happens to be an excellent test of golf."
In addition to hosting the U.S. Amateur Tournament, the USGA announced the course will also play host to the 2017 U.S. Open Championship, marking the first time the championship will be held at the difficult, yet spectacular course.
"I'm deeply honored that Erin Hills has been selected to host the 117th U.S. Open, and I thank the USGA for its confidence in our ability to produce an outstanding championship," said Andrew Ziegler, owner of Erin Hills.
